BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The rain will be coming down in sheets across New England today, with possibly-historic totals in Vermont and the Berkshires.

Metro Boston and much of Eastern Mass. will be spared devastating rainfall, but will still be walloped by serious rain. The Berkshires west of I-91 could get at least four inches of rain total.

Vermont was looking at a prediction of almost five inches in Middlebury and Rutland, with the possibility of up to seven inches in the Green Mountains. Large portions of the state are under Flash Flood Warnings.

If the flooding bears out, it would be the worst rainfall in Northern New England since Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Rescue and fire crews from other parts of the country like Charlotte, North Carolina have been flown in to Vermont to be on standby.
