ANDOVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Days after their five-year-old daughter was killed in a pedestrian collision in Andover, the Olson family has established a scholarship fund at SHED Children's Campus.

The Sidney Mae Olson Rainbow Scholarship Fund is intended to provide those wanting to give back a platform to do so, in memory of Sidney, who was tragically struck by a truck while crossing Elm Street with the walk signal on Tuesday.

"Sidney was a bright-eyed, energetic girl with springy curls. She was in the Springboard to Kindergarten program at SHED school in Andover, where she was known for her soft-spoken curiosity, and her budding ability to deescalate conflict and find common ground in groups," the Olson family said in a statement.

As for the "rainbow" in the scholarship fund's name, the Olson family said Sidney wanted the theme of her last birthday to be rainbow because "it includes everyone's favorite color."

Sidney's family says they plan on having the scholarship going for years to come, keeping her memory "alive at the place that ignited her creative and caring spirit."

The intersection where Sidney was killed is known to be a dangerous one, the Olson family said in their statement that while they're not engineers, they know the community can do better, lobbying for the town to make changes to its local high-traffic intersections.
