BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's called Boston's largest day of free cultural experiences.
Fenway Alliance started the 'Opening Our Doors Festival' in 2001 with 12 institutions and a mission to 'open the doors' to the city's most iconic and historic institutions for a free day celebrating art, music, creative performances, and cultural experiences.
That event, held on Monday this year, has now expanded to include the entire Fenway Cultural District.
More than 10,000 people attend the various events and performances that include Huntington Theatre, Boston Symphony Hall, the Christian Science Plaza, and the Massachusetts Historical Society.
Fenway Alliance Co-Director Kelly Brilliant said as the festival keeps growing, it keeps getting better. "Every year it gets bigger and the art quality is amazing," she said. "It is to provide accessible art to all Bostonians. This is their heritage. This is a gift to them. But they also make the festival what it is."
Among this year's performers was a quintet from the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Niall was one of the violinists.
He said he had a blast performing in front of the crowd. "It was really rewarding to see how our two months of work resulted in such a good performance," he said.
Joining the BYSO for a duet on piano was Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. "In Boston, there are so many opportunities to run into people and have an impromptu jam session," she said.
