Field Hospital At DCU Center In Worcester Closing Down, For Now

WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ News Radio) — The field hospital at the DCU Center in Worcester will hibernate again as it discharges its last patient.

The last patient at the temporary hospital will be discharged Monday, March 15. The facility is run by UMass Memorial Healthcare, and first went live last April. It could provide space for about 240 patients at peak capacity.

After a period of hibernation over the summer, the hospital was brought online again in December.

Dr. John Broach, of UMass Memorial, runs the DCU site. He says his goal was to create a cordial healthcare environment in a cavernous arena space.

Dr. Broach says the field hospital at the DCU center can be reactivated at a moment's notice, but that he hopes this is the last time it needs to be used.
