BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With one year to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, preparations are well underway in the host cities, including Foxboro.
A World Cup Countdown Clock has been put up next to Quincy Market.
The tournament kicks off June 11, 2026, in Mexico City.
With 48 teams, the games will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Boston will host seven of the games in Foxboro at Gillette Stadium including two knockout games.
World Cup Boston CEO Mike Loynd said for those fans who don't score tickets to the games, there are other opportunities to watch including at the official World Cup Fan Fest in Boston, or at local viewing parties. "We see this as a celebration to give people a special moment around the World Cup that they'll remember for the rest of their lives," he said.
During the World Cup, Gillette Stadium will be temporarily rebranded as 'Boston Stadium.'
Meet Boston CEO Martha Sheridan said the World Cup is expected to generate $1.1 billion for the region. "The impact goes well beyond the dollar number, into the fact this will be putting Boston on a global stage in front of millions of eyes for three to four weeks, so we are super excited to host this event."
FIFA will be putting tickets on sale later this summer.
There is a process to order tickets that includes registering on the FIFA website.
