BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Double, double toil and trouble, today is National Horror Movie Day.

Every year on Oct. 23, horror enthusiasts celebrate their favorite genre of cinema. The unofficial holiday was created in 2023 by Black Vortex Cinema as a way to honor the creativity and passion behind horror film productions. While some avoid the fictional goons and goblins, others embrace them.

"I love 'em. Yeah, you know, the scary the better," one horror enthusiast said. "Especially around nine o'clock at night when there's no noise, you know? And then you start watching and then you start looking around. You hear a crack or something, you know. A creep or something."

Horror movies have existed since the 1800s and have become a staple in movie culture. From 'Friday the 13th' to 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' some residents believe there is something to be said about the type of horror movies you watch.

"Like in horror movies, it tells you a little bit about the person," one resident said.

But, not everyone wants to experience the unnerving and anxious feeling that a good scare can provide.

"I don't watch horror movies," another resident said. "Because they scare me. I have an irrational fear of clowns. I was forced to watch IT as a child. I am not watching one, even if it's a holiday."
