BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The last few days were fire, but now Massachusetts is looking at a forecast of ice. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the mid-to-low 30's close to Route 128, and dip down to the 20's further inland toward Central and Western Mass. It comes after Red Flag warnings on Tuesday and Wednesday that presaged several intense brush fires.
Those kind of temperatures can damage tender young plants, which are trying to get a foothold in the ground this time of year.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Cadima said the plants would be okay at the freezing mark for an hour or two, but anything under 30 degrees for a prolonged period of time could cause significant harm.
He explained that the air was bone dry and the weather will be clear. That allows the region to lose huge amounts of heat.
The Red Flag Warning is not expected to be reupped tomorrow.
