MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A dozen of counties in the Commonwealth are under red flag warnings Tuesday as firefighters continue to contain ongoing brushfires, including one at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton.
Flames erupted there on Monday afternoon and quickly engulfed to more than 40 acres. Only 10% has been contained, according to the state's Department of Conservation & Recreation.
"I've been in this area for 24 years. I've never seen anything like this," said Monty, who works nearby.
Fire crews from neighboring towns have been assisting the Milton and Canton Fire Department with containment efforts.
Tuesday's forecast calls for a gusty breeze and low humidity, heightening concerns about the fire spreading.
“It’s unbelievably dry,” Monty added. “The river, there’s no water. It’s just crazy.”
Road closures in the area of Hillside Street from Unquity Road to Blue Hill River Road and part of Chickitawbut Road affected the Tuesday morning commute for drivers.
“I just have to go on the highway now,” one resident said, adding that the detour adds about 15 extra minutes.
Relief could be on way as rain is expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
“We need rain, we need rain badly,” Monty said.
