CHATHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) -- While many may panic when they see a great white shark swimming in the ocean, scientists were overjoyed to see one.

South of Chatham inlet, Dr. Greg Skomal, working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory, tagged the first great white shark of the season.

In the just 15 feet of water, a 12-foot male shark was spotted missing his left pectoral fin. It is believed the shark had been previously injured.

Skomal tagged the shark so his team can observe the shark's route and study its behaviour.

Two other great whites were seen in the area Wednesday but only this shark was tagged.

Beachgoers and residents can track shark spotting off of the Cape through the Sharktivity App.
