METHUEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Forest Lake in Methuen is closed until further notice due to high levels of E. coli in the water, city officials announced Wednesday.
Water activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming are prohibited until the Methuen Health Department determines the lake to be safe.
"We understand that some residents may be tempted to venture into the water despite the closure," Mayor Neil Perry's Office said in a statement. "However, we strongly advise against it, as the health risks associated with E. coli contamination should not be taken lightly. Your well-being is of utmost importance to us, and we implore you to wait until we officially announce the reopening of the lake."
While most strains of E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria are harmless, others can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, pneumonia, and other illnesses.
