BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former nurse pleaded guilty on Wednesday to adulteration of fentanyl at a local hospital.

After getting charged in Nov. 2023, 39-year-old Caroline Sheehan from Lowell, Mass. pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of adulteration of a prescription drug with intent to defraud and mislead.

In a statement from the Department of Justice, authorities said Sheehan used a syringe to remove fentanyl from an IV bag at a local hospital, replaced the fentanyl with saline and returned it. Another hospital employee removed the IV bag before it could be administered to a patient. Laboratory testing confirmed that the IV bag did not contain the declared concentration of fentanyl.

The charge of adulteration of a prescription drug can carry a sentence of up to three years in prison and a fine as much as $10,000.

Sheehan is scheduled for sentencing on June 12, 2024.
