BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Patriots wide receiver Reche Caldwell was fatally shot on Saturday night during an attempted robbery in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.
According to TMZ, 41-year-old Donald "Reche" Caldwell, who had a career-best season in New England, was "ambushed" by people trying to rob him.
Caldwell was reportedly shot at least twice, once in the leg and once in the chest. His mother told TMZ he died in an ambulance.
Reche Caldwell was picked by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft. He played in San Diego until 2005, signing with the New England Patriots in 2006 where he was the team's leading receiver that year, with 760 yards.
Several of his former teammates have responded to the news of Caldwell's death online, including Wes Welker who tweeted that his "smile and attitude were contagious."
