FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Foxborough School Committee will vote Tuesday night on a potential change to their mascot.

The Foxborough “Warriors” have used a Native American mascot for decades. Some residents see the mascot as an important part of the town's history, while others see it as an offensive and racist depiction of a marginalized community.

“If it’s offensive to a certain culture, then I would get rid of it,” said one Foxborough resident in favor of changing the mascot. “We’re not American Indian, we don’t know how they feel about it.”

Those opposed to the mascot change think the town is making a big deal out of nothing.

“It was never meant to be offensive,” said one resident opposed to the mascot change. “It’s been around since my children went to school here back in the 80s, so it’s always been a symbol.”

“I think it’s pretty much making a mountain out of a molehill,” said another supporter of keeping the mascot. “They’re making a big deal out of it, and I think they should keep the logo as it is.”

“I am Native American myself, so I don’t think it is that big of a deal,” said another resident against the change.

The vote will take place at Foxborough Town Hall on Tuesday night.
