FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler will be returning to his old stomping grounds this weekend as a part of the Super Bowl XLIX reunion weekend at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots will welcome back Butler for their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday to kick off the 2024 season.

Butler will continue the Gillette Stadium tradition known as the Keeper of the Light. This started last year with Tom Brady, who rang the bell atop the stadium’s new lighthouse before the team’s introduction.

“It’s an honor to come back and celebrate with my teammates and the fans who have supported us throughout the years,” said Butler.

Ten years ago, at Super Bowl XLIX, Butler became a hero in Super Bowl history when he secured a 28-24 victory over the Seahawks by intercepting a Russell Wilson pass at the goal line. This moment has been dubbed as one of the greatest game-deciding plays in Super Bowl history.

According to a press release, all players and coaches from that historic championship season were invited to attend the weekend’s festivities. For some alumni, it will be their first visit to Foxborough in nearly a decade. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are not expected to attend due to their broadcasting responsibilities.

Kickoff for Sunday’s Patriots-Seahawks game is 1 pm.
