FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Framingham musician has created an album inspired by icebergs and made them a part of the music in an ambitious way.

While a majority of the album was recorded in Boston, singer-songwriter Dan Cloutier completed multiple songs from his newest project The Iceberg in Greenland and Newfoundland, allowing him to record the tracks right next to the massive ice formations.

Cloutier said that the entire album was inspired by icebergs, using them as a metaphor for the mental health struggles, grief and the loss of his father, all of which he went through during the making of the album.

“The songs and the album all deal with tough times and hope, finding hope in the midst of dark seasons of life,” Cloutier said. “Just like an iceberg, you can’t see what’s underneath.”

He talked about how icebergs tend to have a lot more hidden than one could see with the naked eye, comparing that to how life can be.

“Some of them are as tall as the Empire State Building on top of the water, which means that they’re, like, ten times the size below the water.” Cloutier said.

Last summer’s recording trip was crowd-sourced by listeners, allowing him to fund these unorthodox recording setups and bring the album to life.

Courtier said that he felt the ambition of the trip was a major aspect of why people wanted to support the project.

“I think because it was an adventure, it was the reason why people got so on board and why it was a little different,” he said. “It’s not just an album; it was an adventure.”

The Iceberg, the complete eleven-song project, was released on May 2.
