BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The fare free bus program on three MBTA bus routes is expected to continue for at least two more years.
The free fares specifically apply to bus routes 23, 28, and 29 which serve the communities of Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan.
WBZ’s Mike Macklin spoke with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who announced the continuation of the program on Tuesday and why it is so important.
“We’ve seen so many benefits from this [program] such as faster boarding times and more reliability,” said Wu.
Commuters have taken more than 12 million free trips on the bus routes and have saved an estimated amount of more than $6 million in bus fares in the last two years.
Wu also mentioned that her office plans to keep this program operational and that the city continues to talk with other cities around the Commonwealth who are also taking part in this program as well.
The bus routes run along Blue Hill Avenue and connect riders who are underserved by the MBTA’s transit system.
