WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s time to get out there and catch some fish! That’s what officials from MassWildlife are saying as free fishing weekend coincides with the beginning of June.
During “Free Fishing Weekend," all are invited to visit any public lake, pond, reservoir, stream or river within the Commonwealth and fish without the need of a fishing license.

“If you’ve always thought that you wanted to give fishing a try, but you didn’t want to commit to buying a license, now is your opportunity to get out there and fish without a license,” said Ian Sypek, Outdoor Education Specialist with MassWildlife.
Sypek also encouraged those with more experience with the pastime to bring out family and friends for the fun of it.
“We also would encourage experienced anglers, if you got friends and family that are interested in fishing, feel free to bring them out as well,” said Sypek.

WBZ NewsRadio also spoke with Neil Gordon who is new to fishing but loves the idea of free fishing weekend.
“I think it’s a great hobby for $30, I got a rod and a reel, and they work!” Gordon quipped.
While fishing is free this weekend, MassWildlife reminds residents that the same rules apply when it comes to taking fish home.
“Just make sure that if you are taking fish home that you are adhering to our regulations,” Sypek added.
One local fisherman also shared some advice he has for those who plan to cast rods for the first time this weekend.
“Don’t go crazy with the [fishing] gear for the first time [out there],” he said.
