QUINCY, Mass.(WBZ NewsRadio) — Between holiday shopping, skiing, and good old eggnog, everything costs something in the cold months.
But at least in Quincy, you don’t have to shell out anything to hit the ice.
This is the second year the city has offered winter skate sessions and rentals for free, although it’s at a location new to this season— across from Quincy District Court on Chestnut Street.
For its debut, the rink was in a parking lot that is now part of a construction project.
Quincy Director of Recreation Chris Rooney said the new rink will be open until the end of Quincy school's February vacation.
"Last year was a huge success, so we decided to bring the rink back this year," Rooney said. "We think it's going to be very popular and very crowded throughout the week."
The rink’s Opening Day on Monday ushered in skaters of all skill levels, among them were friends Joe and Darien.
Darien said he hasn't skated in a while, but his friend Joe offered to give him some pointers. "My buddy Joe asked me to come skating," Darien said.
While he enjoys ice skating with friends, Joe wanted to make it clear that hockey is not his sport.
"This is my fourth-year skating," he said. "I do not play hockey. I am a football player. But this is a fun time with the boys. Fun time with old friends."
The rink is open seven days a week from noon to 8 p.m., and for those who thought they read it wrong the first time — yes, ice time and skate rentals are completely free.
