BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Friday is National Donut Day.

The holiday was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a day to honor volunteers and service members from the First World War. Now every year, donut lovers find local bakeries and national chains offering deals on these deep-fried rings of sweet dough.

Does it make Friday a little bit better? Some say absolutely!

"Yep, no one wants to wake up early and go to work, but we have to, and donuts make it a little bit better," one resident said.

Here are five places offering deals to those who celebrate:

Blackbird Doughnuts - Offering a variety of deals for the holiday

Duck Donuts - Offering a free classic donut

Dunkin' Donuts - Offering a free donut with any beverage purchase

Honey Dew Donuts - Offering a free donut with any drink purchase

Salvation Army - Offering free donuts at the Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center on Dudley Street and in Cambridge on Massachusetts Avenue.
