UPDATE - 2:47 p.m. 2/3/25: The U.S. and Mexico reached an agreement to delay tariffs on goods imported from Mexico for one month. President Trump announced the pause on Truth Social and said as a part of the deal Mexico agreed to send 10,000 troops to the border to help "stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants" into the U.S. The President adds that his administration will use the next month to negotiate with the Mexican government to reach a "deal".
BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The potential impacts of tariffs are at the top of many people's minds, including those here in the Commonwealth.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump followed through on his campaign promise to impose tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump said the tariffs may cause “some pain,” adding that “it will all be worth the price that must be paid."
With the tariffs set to go into effect on Tuesday, consumers are bracing for a price jump on items from oil to avocados. WBZ NewsRadio’s Suzanne Sausville asked Bostonians what they thought, most of whom were against the tariffs.
“We’ll now see the price of so many things increase here,” said one woman. “[He’s] so incredibly dishonest.”
“It’s all just stupid. It’s hard for me to talk about without getting angry,” said another man.

Reaction to the tariffs was not all negative though, especially not for those who voted for President Trump last November. One man was particularly happy to see the president go after Canada.
“I support anything he does,” the man said. “They get what they deserve. They want to kick back on us and, well, sorry.”
In response to President Trump's executive action, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced retaliatory tariffs. One Bostonian said he believes red states are going to feel the most impact.
“Trump is dangerous and this is just another example. It’s ironic that the people that voted for Trump are going to be hurt most by the tariffs,” said the man.
