BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — There appears to be a growing trend among Gen Z, and this time, it doesn’t involve wide-legged pants.
Gen Z is eating dinner earlier these days and booking restaurant reservations before 7 p.m., according to The Times. It's a decision that some young people might have previously considered taboo.
Post-millennials in Boston told WBZ NewsRadio that eating earlier saves them time to make more plans after dinner so the night can live on.
“It's very relaxed, laid back, and then it leaves you more time to maybe go to a bar afterwards,” one woman said.
She also said it makes the commute home on public transportation easier. “You're always conscious of like, ‘how am I getting home? What's the last tram? What's the last train?’ – I need to be on it so I'm avoiding any taxi costs at all possible,” she said.
Research suggests eating late could promote obesity if these conditions happen often enough. According to a 2020 article published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, a late dinner can contribute to weight gain by altering people’s substrate metabolism when they sleep.
Gen Zers who have hopped on this trend are one step ahead of night-time crowds that draw in wait times at Boston restaurants. Calling it quits earlier in the night leaves them with more minutes to spare when it is time to head home.
