CHATHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The names are silly, but the species is not.
There are more than 600 white sharks identified by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in Chatham; Big Daddy, Scarface, Cow, Fruit Loops, and Cheerio to name a few.
And while the names tend to be on the humorous side, they serve a serious purpose by providing researchers with a unique description of each shark.
Conservancy Research Coordinator Ashley Novak said it’s not easy keeping track of all the sharks they’ve identified, and each having a name helps. “Many of the names are created and inspired by that individual’s unique markings,” she said. “It might seem silly but it’s actually really useful.”
All the names and sharks can be found on the Sharktivity app, a great way to safely get up close and personal with apex predators.
