BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — STEM, an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, was in the spotlight for Girl Scouts at Gillette World Shaving Headquarters in South Boston Thursday morning.
The event, called STEM Career Academy Day, was part of a larger initiative to encourage and promote STEM careers to the next generation of young women. It was inspired by Karan Dyson, Gillette’s Head of Global Process and Engineering, who says that she didn’t meet another female engineer until college. She wants to make sure that no one else has that experience.
“For young girls like you to have an opportunity to have a STEM experience [is hugely important],” Dyson said in her remarks at the event.
Dyson believes that it is critical for the children to not only hear about the possibilities of a STEM career, but to see and connect with a woman who is succeeding in the STEM field today, like Procter & Gamble Senior Formulator Marilyn Westgate, who was also at the event to conduct an interactive STEM experiment with future female leaders.
Dyson also went on to emphasize the importance of female leadership and female contributions in the STEM field.
“We need diversity of thought and diversity of experience, we need women!” Dyson said enthusiastically.
Another component of the workshop was geared towards teaching the scouts how chemistry and 3-D modeling go into making products.
