FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadioGillette Stadium in Foxborough joined a list of potential stadiums and cities to host games in the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

The United States is part of a joint bid with Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica for the 2031 women's tournament. Foxborough was not listed as one of the primary host locations in the United States Soccer Federation's proposal. However, it was listed as one of the “suitable cities” being more broadly considered, meaning “they will continue to be equally considered for the purposes of stadium selection in the future.”

Local residents told WBZ NewsRadio they welcome the idea to host another big soccer event.

“Given how much history there is here at Gillette Stadium, I think it's great for the international fans to come see this area,” one resident said.

Gillette Stadium is set to host seven games in the upcoming FIFA World Cup next year.

“We really think that it could bring some community vibe to our town,” Danielle told WBZ NewsRadio, adding that as a storeowner in the city, she’s excited about the potential business this will also bring.

"Having a small store in town, we’re hoping it brings in more foot traffic,” she said.

In addition to supporting the local economy, Amelia said it’s also important to spotlight women’s sports.

“I think women’s sports is really important to celebrate and support it, so whatever we can do,” she said.

While some others said they worry about the traffic jams during games, it’s not a big concern to deter the idea.

“I avoid Route 1 like the plague when there’s a game, so I would do it regardless,” Amelia said.

FIFA is set to vote on a decision sometime next year.
