WALTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts's top five cookie sellers celebrated their success at the Waltham Headquarters ahead of cookie season on Thursday.

The event featured a celebratory brunch, an interactive roundtable with the product program team, and hands-on marketing and media training as a part of the organization's mission to continue to provide the scouts with practical life skills beyond selling cookies. CEO Monica Roberts says these lessons are necessary for their professional development.

"I'm so excited to have our top five Girl Scout cookie sellers here today because you know it's when we think about Girl Scout cookies, that's not just about selling cookies," Roberts said. "It's about the skills they're building right so they're building leadership skills, they're learning how to work as part of a team, they're learning business ethics, they're learning financial management — so many skills that our girls need for life."

Junior Scout Alex says she has gained vital knowledge with the programs and opportunities offered through the Girl Scouts.

"I learned how to be a leader, money management, how to be a good friend, how to talk to strangers because I'm a very shy person. So it's good to help me talk to people I don't know," Alex said.

Since there is more to the Scouts than selling cookies, girls like Emma say she is embracing the data analytics that comes with the territory.

"There's like a rank like on like on the website," Emma stated.

The girls also took a walk down memory lane at the museum inside the headquarters. The tour featured artifacts from the Scouts' history.

"I really like learning about the history and looking at all the different uniforms, and like the way they had to carry stuff to camp," Alex remarked.

The Girl Scouts were founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia. The first troop consisted of 18 girls with the mission to make the world a better place.
