GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester closed for swimming Friday morning due to another shark sighting.
The Gloucester Beaches Facebook account, run by the city of Gloucester, posted the beach advisory at 9:23 a.m. Friday, telling the public to stay out of the water until further notice and follow lifeguard instructions.
This is the second shark sighting in the area in less than 24 hours.
Early Thursday afternoon, the Gloucester Beaches Account posted that Good Harbor Beach was closed for swimming due to a shark sighting at the nearby Long Beach and that the Harbormaster was investigating.
The advisory was lifted about three hours later, after the city inspected the water and didn’t observe any shark activity.
Sharks aren’t the only thing keeping swimmers out of the water. Good Harbor Beach and many others along the Massachusetts Coast put out warnings this week about high winds and rip currents caused by Hurricane Erin.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for most of the Massachusetts Coast through Saturday evening. The National Weather Service warns conditions could be life-threatening for swimmers and surfers, and hazardous for small craft.
