BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey and Congressman Jake Auchincloss addressed the Charles River Regional Chamber on Monday about the economy, but also spoke about President Trump’s comments on running for a third term.

“Disturbing and alarming, as somebody who practices constitutional law, and I think for anybody who understands basic democracy and how things have worked in this country,” Governor Healey said regarding the president’s comments.

She, however, emphasized that her top focus was still on the people of the Commonwealth, despite her uneasy thoughts on the current administration.

Congressman Auchincloss also spoke on the president’s claims. He pointed to congressional Republicans as being part of the problem in allowing the president to act and speak this way.

“The thing to pay attention to is the silence from congressional Republicans,” Rep. Auchincloss said.

He said that their inability to fight back for what he thinks is injustice also bleeds into the rest of their work.

“Even when the President of the United States says something so blatantly illegal, they will still refuse to stand up to him, and that tells the American people that they are spineless,” he said. “If they can’t be counted on to stand up for the constitution against such a blatant threat, how can they be counted on to stand up for health care, for social security, for the economy.”

Auchincloss also mentioned a particular American Revolution anniversary that he felt was timely in the wake of these comments.

“Massachusetts is about to celebrate in two weeks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which is a good time to remind Washington D.C. that we do not like kings, and we do not like people that act like kings,” Auchincloss said.
