Greater Boston Is Fifth Most Expensive Place In U-S To Raise Family

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Residents of the greater Boston area are probably not surprised by the results of a new study by SmartAsset.com that ranks the Boston/Cambridge/Newton region as the fifth-most expensive area in the country to raise a child.

The average annual cost for that area when considering childcare, housing, and food is more than $32,000.

In Jamaica Plain, virtually every resident we spoke with acknowledged the high cost of living in this area and the challenges of raising a family.

One resident said anyone who chooses to live in this area knows ahead of time that affordability is a big concern. ”That’s just one of the things you assume you have to figure out,” he said.

Another said she feels bad for young families who are trying to raise a family in this area. “I don’t know how people can afford to live in Boston or buy a house anymore,” she said. “It’s ridiculous.”

Ranking one spot ahead of the greater Boston area, Barnstable ranks as the fourth-most expensive area to live and raise a child.
