GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Chaos has erupted on beaches across Massachusetts thanks to conspicuous green horseflies terrorizing beachgoers.

"They are definitely here in full force," Wingaersheek Beach staff said.

Greenheads have made their annual appearance on north shore beaches. Appearing from June to August, the large green-eyed insects seek out blood meals during the summer months to assist with their egg development.

"They're pretty bad right now. And compared to the last few years, I mean, it's gotten worse this year," staff members added.

Produced from coastal marshes, greenheads are not considered harmful and don't transmit diseases, but they do produce headaches for those who have to deal with them.

"We use bug spray, but realistically, nothing works. Like, these things are just a nuisance," the staff remarked.

Some residents recommend using gin as a method to keep the greenheads at bay, but the Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District suggest these methods to reduce the nuisance:

  • Biting flies prefer dark over light objects. Wear appropriate apparel with this in mind.
  • Dry off after being in water
  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt for protection
  • Timing – female flies are most active from 10:00 am to dusk.
  • Screen in pools, porches, patios, etc.
  • Keep windows on cars closed. If some flies enter, brush them out – do not take a chance, the distraction could cause you an accident.
  • Remember – sprays, perfumes, and increased metabolic activity serve to attract the biting female.
