SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Costanza legacy lives on in the Witch City.
Runners took part in the 12th running of the Festivus 5K race in downtown Salem Sunday. The annual race raises funds to support the Northshore Education Consortium, which provides services for students with autism.
"We are able to purchase additional communication devices for students: iPads, laptops, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy," said Martha Krol, Principal of Kevin O'Grady School in Beverly.
Race organizer Cindy Johnson told WBZ NewsRadio the event was born out of love.
"My son got diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and we were looking for a way to give back," Johnson said. "We just always loved Seinfeld and we were looking for a holiday race. The theme fit the bill, and sometimes the holidays just aren’t what you expect it to be, so this is the Festivus for the rest of us."
Children from the student culinary program baked muffin tops and made t-shirts to give to the runners. There was also an airing of grievances contest, though in a break from Festivus tradition, it came at the end.
