BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — City officials including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu were at a groundbreaking ceremony in Dorchester Wednesday for the future site of the new Boston Center for Youth and Families Grove Hall Community Center.

Right now, the Geneva Ave. location is a city-owned vacant lot.

But Mayor Wu said the site will soon be transformed into a new, thriving community center that Grove Hall families deserve. "For too long, Dorchester's BCYF centers have been makeshift, shoe-horned into leftover space, squeezed into the bubble, or other locations," she said.

The mayor added the new center will feature modern amenities for local residents of all ages. "This new, sustainable, state-of-the-art building will have a gym, an accessible pool, spaces for our seniors and our teens, community and conference rooms, art and tech rooms."

Officials said the new 42,000 square foot facility will be Dorchester's first stand-alone BCYF center since all of the centers are currently in school buildings.

The new center is being funded by Boston's five-year capital plan.
