BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A safety advocacy group is calling for more safety improvements along the Boston University bridge.
The BU Bridge Safety Alliance is sponsoring a public meeting on Nov. 14 so that the public and transportation officials can give their input and feedback.
"This corridor is very dangerous with more than 87 reported crashes between 2018 and 2022 in which 32 people were injured, including 10 people riding bicycles and 2 people walking," the group said in a statement.
"Tragically, this corridor was the site where John Corcoran lost his life while bicycling on Sept 23, 2024 after being struck by a speeding SUV."
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is in the middle of a $1.5-million project to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety along Memorial Drive in Cambridge.
Advocates and some BU students said more can be done.
"Kids are like trying to cross when it's still the walk sign but cars don't obey that," said one student.
Another agreed saying drivers will drive forward even as pedestrians are still crossing the street.
"Sometimes if the walk sign just closed, people still cross, and the cars don't really care that they are crossing," she said."
Along with members of the public, officials from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, DCR, and the Boston Transportation Department are invited to attend the hybrid meeting.
