Half Of All Coronavirus Deaths In Mass. Are In Long-Term Care Facilities

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Friday, the state Department of Public Health announced another 2,221 cases of coronavirus, for a total of 34,402 cases in the state.

DPH also reported an additional 159 deaths attributed to the virus, bringing the state's death toll to 1,404. Exactly half of the deaths in Massachusetts, 702, were reported at long-term care facilities.

The number of deaths at care facilities related to the virus has almost tripled since last Friday, as the state heads into what Gov. Baker has called the surge period of the pandemic.

The uptick in COVID-related deaths at care facilities also comes amid several ongoing investigations into the deaths of at least 44 veterans at Soldiers' Home Holyoke.

A total of 240 individual care facilities across the state are now reporting at least one case of coronavirus.
