PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — What may seem like a trick of the eye is as real and delicious as it gets.
The Maine-based supermarket chain Hannaford has recently begun selling fresh lobster rolls for only $9.99. The deal lasts through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.
"As a grocery retailer with deep roots in Maine, we’re thrilled to offer our customers the opportunity to enjoy a classic New England staple at such an incredible value," said Chef Dorene Mills of Hannaford Supermarkets in a press release. "Our delicious grab-and-go lobster rolls are freshly-prepared in our stores each day, making them a convenient addition to any summer meal, picnic or celebration."

In a time when ordering a lobster roll at a restaurant can make a dent in your wallet, Hannaford's lower price sticks out like a sore claw. The company said its connection with local lobster suppliers allows it to sell the New England delicacy at a competitive cost.
One loyal Hannaford customer in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who was suffering sticker shock from a $49 lobster roll she got early Friday afternoon, was delighted to find out about her favorite grocery store's summer offer.
"This is where I should be buying it," she told WBZ NewsRadio.
Other customers at the Portsmouth Hannaford also expressed enthusiasm.
"I think we definitely got to try it here," one person said.
"Listen, if you have a choice between a lobster roll and no lobster roll, I think you just have to go for the lobster roll," another person said.
However, not every lobster lover was sold.
"I gotta wonder what quality the lobster meat is. Because that’s pretty cheap," one man said.
"I mean, we have so much good seafood, it’s easy to get for ourselves or to just splurge, so I don’t tend to get it from the grocery store," said another customer.
"Absolutely not," one woman bluntly put it.
What is not up for debate is the promotion's success; the Portsmouth location sold out of lobster rolls by lunchtime.
