LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — ‘Happy to Chat Benches’ are an idea that took hold in the United Kingdom, and are being imported in parts of the U.S, including here in Middlesex County.

The benches are being installed throughout the county at different locations to promote connectivity and happiness by encouraging people to sit, connect, and have a conversation, whether they know each other or not.

On Wednesday, students from the Moody School in Lowell joined Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan for a ribbon cutting ceremony at a new bench right outside the front entrance of the school. “It has been shown by the research that having a bench that two people can sit down and just talk for a few minutes, whether they know each other or not, that little piece of kindness can really make a difference…” she said.
