MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officials at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Milton are closely monitoring the animal sanctuary amid an active brush fire burning at the reservation nearby.

Hikers told WBZ NewsRadio that even though smoke is not visible near the museum, they hope the flames don’t spread.

“This whole section all the way over to Houghton’s pond, there’s no fire at all, so maybe it’ll be okay,” said Quincy resident Mark, who frequents the trail.

Polly Macisaac wasn’t aware of the nearby brush fire until she got to the trails, adding that “hopefully it won’t get over here to the Trailside Museum and the animal center.”

In a statement sent to WBZ NewsRadio, Stephen Hutchinson, Mass. Audubon’s Senior Regional Director, said that the "brushfires are not currently impacting Blue Hills Trailside Museum or Chickatawbut," but they are monitoring "the situation closely."

Meanwhile, the flame has already burned more than 40 acres since Monday afternoon and only 10% have been contained, according to Mass. Department of Conservation & Recreation.

“I think [the animals] will be fine, plus we’re supposed to get rain Thursday,” Mark continued.
