Headstones Knocked Over In Hingham Cemetery

HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police are investigating after several headstones were knocked over in Hingham Cemetery.

The damage at the cemetery was called in to Hingham Police Wednesday afternoon. Officers found nine headstones in the same row on a hill between the Main and South Street entrances had been damaged.

The department said it didn't appear that any one group or family were targeted by the vandals, but did say several of the headstones belonged to veterans.

Hingham Cemetery, a private cemetery dating back to 1672, has entrances on Main, South, and Water Streets.

A person who walks through the cemetery often reported the damage. The previous day, a brush fire was reported in a different area of the cemetery.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Hingham Police Detectives at 781-741-1443, or leave an anonymous tip using the "Submit A Tip" feature on HPD.org.
