HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A young girl is safe after being chased by a coyote in Hingham Tuesday morning.

The fifth grader was walking her dog before school when the coyote started following and then chasing her down Flintlock Street. A nearby adult saw the coyote chasing the girl and scared off the animal before it could reach her.

The girl and her dog were uninjured in the incident, which is the latest in a recent string of coyote encounters on the South Shore that have residents on high alert.

"In my neighborhood, we have the same four coyotes, and they’re out in the day," Hingham resident Lisa told WBZ NewsRadio.

The town's animal control said their options are limited since the coyotes do not appear to be sick and have not attacked a person. They are advising residents that making loud noises is the best bet in scaring away a coyote should they encounter one.
