Historic Normandy Invasion Flag Sells At Boston Auction

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A historic flag, commemorating the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion by American troops has sold for $45,125. The flag was a rare and historic 48-star U.S. Naval Ensign flag from the USS Burnett County, an LST-491 class tank landing ship.

The flag originated from the collection of WWII veteran George Wimpenny Roy, Seaman 1st Class, U.S. Navy. Various WWII era souvenirs accompanied the flag including shrapnel, shell casings, currency, and a handwritten note from Roy.  

“Artifacts like this flag are a tangible connection to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served during World War II,” said Bobby Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction. “In the wake of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we are honored to have facilitated its sale and preservation.”  

Other items from the auction included a George Washington signed document from 1771, a collection of over 500 photographs signed in-person by Hollywood stars, and a Robert Oppenheimer signed photograph with Albert Einstein sold for $18,760.  

The auction began on May 22 and concluded on June 12.
