HOLLISTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Holliston dog is training to make his debut at the Boston Marathon, a year after his predecessor's death.

Jimmy, an 11-month-old English golden retriever, will carry a "Boston Strong" flag along the route.

"He can hold the flags and does it well," Jimmy's owner, Rich Powers, told WBZ NewsRadio's Kim Tunnicliffe. "We'll see how he does."

The Powers family also owned Jimmy's predecessor, Spencer.

Spencer carried the flag at every running of the marathon starting in 2018.

Powers said living up to Spencer's legacy will be a tall task for young Jimmy.

"I don't thinks he'll live up to the standards of what Spencer ever did at this point because he is very young," Powers said. "But he does enjoy the attention."

A year after Spencer's death, Powers is raising money for a bronze statue of the original "Boston Strong" flag bearer along the race route in Ashland, Mass.

He is 10,000 dollars shy of his goal.
