BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With the Memorial Day holiday approaching, planning for upcoming events and activities is underway.
At the Boston Common on Wednesday, for the 15th consecutive year, more than 37,000 flags were placed around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
Each flag represents every service member from Massachusetts who has died defending the United States over the past 249 years.
For Gold Star Wives, each who lost a husband fighting in an overseas war, the annual tradition of placing flags holds special significance. "To me, this honors my husband," said one of the wives. "He always wanted to help others, especially veterans. I feel by doing things like this I am carrying on his legacy."
Organized by 'Home Base' and the 'Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund,' the display is open to the public all weekend.
