BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Riding in on a surprising 7-3 record, the Boston Red Sox play their home opener today against the Baltimore Orioles.
Even more surprising than the team's early-season success and tickets being available on game day, is the weather. Forecasters are calling for a nice day, partly sunny with temperatures in the 50s, although a stiff spring breeze out of the northeast will make it feel cooler.
There were a few early-bird fans out at Lansdowne Street this morning waiting for the ticket office to open. But not the big crowds from years past, a testament to the mediocre-to-last-place teams the Red Sox front office has put out on the field the past few years. "This morning, it is quiet," one fan said.
Another said the past few opening days have been quieter than previous ones. "It's how it's been the last few years," he said. "But at least I'm not like sixteen layers deep with seven parkas on."
The Red Sox haven't had a first place finish since 2018. And despite having one of the highest payrolls in all of major league baseball, the Red Sox finished in last place three of the last four seasons.
But hope springs eternal, and at least early in the season, the Red Sox are playing their home opener in 2nd place.
In addition to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Red Sox and their October ride to the club's first World Series championship in 86 years, the pregame ceremony today will honor the memories of three beloved members of the Sox family, Tim and Stacy Wakefield, and Larry Lucchino.
