BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The 50th annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is taking place Thursday night, and some locals have some tips on how to beat the crowds.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to descend upon the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade for the 4th of July event.

One person shared that the far side of the Charles River is a good spot if people want to avoid the congestion.

“Boston is obviously crowded. The Esplanade is going to be a disaster. So I would suggest if you want to do last second, go to the Cambridge side of the Charles River and watch from Memorial Drive.”

Another person said he would be heading to one of the bridges over the Charles River.

The fireworks are launched from the middle of the river, so people can find a quieter spot on the other side from the crowded event that has a similar view.

Dorchester Heights is another option to view the fireworks show. That area offers “a great view of the city,” one person told WBZ NewsRadio.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular concert begins at 8 p.m., followed by the fireworks themselves at 10:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public, and admission is first-come, first-serve.
