CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of people gathered at Porter Square Books on Sunday to help move its inventory to the shop's new location on the campus of Lesley University.

The new storefront is about 1,000 feet away from the shop's current location on White Street.

Fans of the store volunteered to form a human chain to pass the books to the new store.

"They want to be a part of it," Porter Square Books owner David Sandberg said. "And this, we thought, was a great way to let them be a part of it."

Sandberg said about 300 people signed up to participate in the human chain leading to a larger storefront in Lesley University's University Hall on Massachusetts Avenue.

One volunteer said they still remembered when Porter Square Books first opened in 2004.

"I love them and I'm happy they get more space," the volunteer said.

Sunday's effort was largely symbolic, a way for the shop's regulars to say goodbye to the old location. Most of the books will be packed into boxes and moved by professional movers.

Monday will be the store's last day on White Street.
