BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds were in attendance for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast to celebrate and remember the civil rights advocate's message and acting on it. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley says the theme of "Keeping the Promise of Democracy" is not something the United States has achieved yet.
"All around us we have sobering evidence that gains are not guaranteed— we need to reflect on our past, revisit King's blueprint for radical change, and fortified ourselves for the urgent fights ahead," Pressley said.
Fighting against the three evils of society, which according to King, are racism, poverty, and war.
"In our democracy right now, as we stare down this presidential election year, all signs are that it will take every ounce of our stamina to move forward and not backward. When people of color in power get together— can't let that happen. Time to gen up the misinformation machine. I'm tired of those fearmongers and mob baiters," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.
Also at the event Governor Maura Healey shared plans to increase state contracts with diverse small businesses through a renewed assessment process.

The Boston Arts Academy's ensemble performed at the breakfast and Bishop Carol Gallagher did the invocation.
