BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of people took off running along the Charles River on Sunday for the 13th annual Boston River Run, all for a good cause.

Race Director Sarah Narcus told WBZ NewsRadio that her family has organized this charity event every year since 2011 in memory of her brother-in-law, Corporal Andrew Narcus, who passed away in a car accident in 2002 while coming home for Christmas.

Boston River run is a 100 percent volunteer-based organization. This year, over 300 participants took on the 3.1 mile course on Soldiers Field Road and Greenough Boulevard.

All the money raised from the event is donated to the Andrew Graham Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit that awards scholarships to help students succeed. This year, the proceeds raised from the charity run is donated to the scholarship at Bunker Hill Community College, Narcus said.

Though the event has gotten smaller over the years, from nearly one thousand runners previous years, Narcus said she actually prefers the smaller races.

“What I love about it when it’s smaller like this is that people will have a real connection to our cause, and I think people come back to the Boston River Run year after year because there’s a story here,” she said.
