BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Runners laced up their shoes at Martin’s Park for the 6th Annual Martin Richard 8K on Sunday morning.
It has been more than 10 years since the Boston Marathon Bombing, where Martin Richards was tragically killed. Martin’s father Bill Richard created the Martin Richard Foundation to carry on his legacy and desire for peace.
“[What makes this] most special is that we’re on our sixth year and that we’re finally able to realize the dream and have the race at Martin’s Park,” said Bill.
A kid’s race along the Seaport Boardwalk set things in motion before runners took off and ended at Cisco Brewery for some rest and relaxation. Free injury screens were also available for the runners.
“It’s worth the effort because it allows us to bring almost a thousand people together, people who have always wanted to be a part of what we do, perhaps can’t run marathons, but can do an 8K race,” said Bill.
Martin’s Park was decorated in blue and gold ribbons to inspire runners like Steph O’Shay of the Dorchester Running Club.
“We’re just here to support and have fun. We don’t leave Dorchester often to run, so we get to have some different views, and then, of course, at the end just to see everybody and to hear about all of the money that was raised to help support all these great non-profits.”
