BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Showers and cold fronts are expected starting Monday, Aug. 19 due to Hurricane Ernesto.
The category 1 hurricane made landfall in Puerto Rico, currently making hazardous weather in Bermuda, and is headed upwards along the Atlantic coasts. As of right now, Ernesto is traveling with a wind speed of 80 miles per hour.
Massachusetts is expected to experience rain and low temperatures in the coming days as well as some dangerous rip currents and high along the southern part of the state. As Ernesto spins north, swells and rip currents in the ocean are also to be expected. The National Hurricane Center warns that dangerous beach conditions will be present in the eastern coast of the country until early next week.
The south facing beach s in Rhode Island and southeast facing beaches of the Cape, Martha ’s Vineyard, and Nantucket will most likely encounter rip currents.
If caught in a rip current, the waves are pushing you away from the shore, so remember to swim parallel to the shore to escape the current and then back to the shore.
Tropical storm season usually lasts from late August through mid-October.
