NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Whether it’s for back-to-school shopping or looking for specialty shoes, Hyman’s Pennyworth’s has been the place to go for shoppers in Newburyport for decades. However, that will soon come to an end.
The store announced it will be closing its doors by the end of the year after 90 years in business. Ownership will be selling the building where the store's Newburyport location resides.
“Hymans has been a staple in our community and it’s just sad to see it go,” one Newburyport resident said.
Store manager Jess Petit says customers have been devastated by the news and the store has been getting an outpouring of support.
“I think it just shows the community of Newburyport how great it is,” Petit said. “One person said I saw the worst obituary in the paper today.”
Petit says they are hoping to stay open through the holidays or until they run out of stock Anything that is left will go to their other location in Lynn
“I like to come to the store and see the fabric and touch the clothes and know what I’m buying,” another customer said.
Customers will have their final chance to head to the store this year, as Hyman’s Pennyworth is having a “Everything Must Go” sale, according to their Facebook page.
