BREWSTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) rescued 11 bottlenose dolphins off the coast of Cape Cod earlier this week.
Fourteen dolphins total were stranded Monday at Linnell Landing in Brewster. Rescue operations lasted through Tuesday morning. Three of the animals died before they could be rescued.
“Upon arrival, 11 dolphins were still alive, and the team immediately began preparing to refloat them with the changing tide,” said Kira Kasper, Biologist and Animal Responder at IFAW.
IFAW was successful in extracting the 11 dolphins from the mud, providing them with the necessary medical care, and transporting them to a safe location where they could be released back into the ocean.
Kasper added that she and her team have “responded to 26 dolphin strandings in the last two weeks and have been monitoring their movements closely.”
IFAW said that the combination of the Cape’s shallow waters, complex tidal movements, and sandbars often disorient dolphins, making it a common spot for strandings.
According to their website, IFAW is a global non-profit helping animals and people thrive together.
